František Chaloupka: Joy

“Joy… We’re lucky… It’s just a test…” sing the nymphs-sirens, articulating a positive atmosphere, the warmth of the fire – the radio receiver. Words bloom into imagination and the future belongs to a certain type of verb: the sirens celebrate, they value a valuable moment – the test of sirens – and glorify technology; the algorithm that allows for all this. They sing an ode, they transmit information, they herald a positive gospel in their systematic meditation.

František Chaloupka (*1981) studied composition at the Janáček Conservatory in Ostrava, JAMU in Brno, the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague, the Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst in Vienna, and at the California Institute of the Arts. He founded the Dunami Ensemble, which focuses on performing original compositions on the borders of avant-garde, experimental, and ambient music. His pieces have been premiered at stages both at home and abroad, and he has composed for the New Opera Days Ostrava festival and Ensemble Modern. He is the founder and director of the Guitar Institute in Brno.
